After consulting with their doctors, a mother and father come to know that their gravely ill daughter needs immediate blood transfusion to save her life and to be able to continue her treatment.
As per doctors, the best donor, the doctor say, is her five year old brother. The boy is terrified of hospitals and of needles and tubes that he has seen his ailing sister confronting . The parents know that this blood transfusion is imperative and we’re concerned that he will balk at the request because of fear. No one wanted to hold the five year old boy down and take blood from him, but it was one of unavoidable situation.
So the parent sit him down as his pale sister lay helplessly in her hospital bed. They explained carefully the seriousness of her condition and how he alone can give her his blood and a fresh lease of life. He listens to them intently, his brow furrowed in worry. After a moment of silence, he looks at his parents and says, ” Are you sure that if I give her my blood, she will survive?”
“It gives her best chance to survive, son”, his father replies. He looks at the ground, crosses and uncrosses his legs, look back at his parents and says solemnly, “Okay, I will do it.”
The medical staff quickly readies the room and the boy is placed on a bed not far from his ailing sister, who thanks him the moment he walks. He only nods as he hears her, readying himself for the transfusion. The doctor pierces his arm and begins the transfusion. As the life giving blood flows to his sister, her colour immediately improves and the parents smile and heave a sigh of relief. After sometime the little boy, his face still a pale display of worry, looks up at the doctor who is checking his improving sister and asks,”Doctor, how long until I die?’
The boy had assumed he would die as he was giving her all his blood, yet he was willing to do so.
Hearing this the mother who was standing nearby, came sobbing and hold the boy so tight in his arms and the flood of tears was unstoppable.
